Method: what this list counts

This is a directory census, not a register extract. What it counts and what it leaves out decides how far you can push it, so both are stated first.

Source and date. Europages, the German company directory listings, pulled on 9 September 2026 with the country filter set to Germany across twelve pharmaceutical-equipment and GMP-supply categories: pharmaceutical machinery, clean room technology, process equipment for the pharmaceutical industry, granulation equipment, sterilization equipment, filling machines for the pharmaceutical industry, cleanroom equipment, packaging lines for the pharmaceutical industry, packaging machinery for the pharmaceutical industry, blister packaging machines, tablet presses and capsule filling machines.

Deduplication. The twelve categories returned 3,140 category listings. Deduplicated on the company profile URL, that is 2,092 unique companies, of which 527 appear under two or more categories. A builder like Optima or Glatt spans filling, packaging and process equipment at once, so the overlap is expected rather than an error.

The state column is a join, and it is ours. Europages carries a city and no postcode or state. We matched each city name against two free GeoNames files for Germany, the postal-code file, which carries a state name per place, and the gazetteer dump, which carries an admin-1 code per populated place, taking the state with the greatest weight where a name occurs more than once. 1,211 distinct cities appear in the data. 16 of them resolved to nothing, covering 16 companies, and those sit under Unassigned rather than being guessed into a state.

The unresolved names are mostly typing errors in the listing itself, among them Burgausen for Burghausen, Hallberdmoos for Hallbergmoos and Buchholz in der Norhdeide for Buchholz in der Nordheide. One is the placeholder Musterstadt and one is China Foshan, a Chinese city on a German-registered profile. Correcting these by hand would move 16 of 2,092 rows and would stop the pull being reproducible, so we left them alone.

What a listing is. A company that holds a Europages profile and has tagged itself into one of these categories. Europages records a role at source, Manufacturer or Producer, Distributor, Wholesaler, Service provider or Customer-specific manufacturer, and all roles stay in the 2,092 because a distributor is still a company in the segment.

What a listing is not. It is not a Handelsregister extract, so a German equipment builder without a Europages profile is missing from this table. It is not a revenue ranking. It is not a GMP-qualified supplier list and carries no evidence that any company here has ever passed a supplier audit. It is not proof that a given company sells into pharmaceutical manufacturing today, only that it has listed itself where pharmaceutical buyers look.

Employee bands. Europages publishes its own band and does not require one. 1,296 of the 2,092 companies declare a band and 796 do not. The band is company-wide headcount, so a group whose pharmaceutical line is one plant of forty carries the whole group's number.

German pharma-equipment suppliers by state

Three states hold 1,256 of the 2,092 companies, 60.0 percent of the list: Nordrhein-Westfalen 441, Baden-Württemberg 429 and Bayern 386. That is the industrial geography of German machinery building rather than anything specific to pharma, and it holds across all twelve categories.

The city ranking underneath tells a different story from the state ranking. The five largest cities are Berlin 62, Hamburg 57, München 31, Düsseldorf 21, Köln 18. Berlin and Hamburg lead on city count while sitting mid-table by state, because a city state is a single city; Nordrhein-Westfalen's 441 companies are spread across Düsseldorf, Köln, Essen and several dozen smaller towns in the Ruhr and the Bergisches Land. Work the state column for territory planning and the city column for travel.

By category

A company can hold more than one category, so this table sums above 2,092. The Companies column counts distinct companies inside a category after deduplication; the Raw listings column is what the category page returned before it.

Granulation equipment is the only category where the two columns differ, 266 against 284, because a handful of companies were listed twice inside that one category under separate profiles for the same firm. Everywhere else the deduplication happens across categories rather than inside them.

By declared company size

The shape here matters more than any single row. 1,296 companies declare a band and the middle of the distribution sits low: 20 to 49 people is the largest band at 413 companies, and 5 to 9 people is second at 339. Only 72 companies declare 1,000 or more.

Read that against how pharmaceutical plants buy. A qualified supplier has to survive a supplier audit and hold documentation, change control and traceability in order. Most of this list is a company of fewer than fifty people doing exactly that, which is why the segment reads as a long tail of specialists rather than a handful of groups.

Download all 2,092 companies as CSV: name, city, state, categories, Europages profile and size band, one row per company. Reuse it with attribution to Ripe Leads and to Europages, and keep the pull date of 9 September 2026 attached.

The 40 largest listings

Ranked by declared employee band first and then by how many of the twelve categories the company appears under, which is a rough proxy for how central pharmaceutical equipment is to what it builds. All 40 sit in the 1,000-plus band, so the ranking inside the table is the category count doing the work.

Names appear as Europages stores them, which is why many are capitalised. Each links to its Europages profile rather than to the company site, because the profile is the record this table was built from.

Two warnings about the bottom of this table. Europages' top band has no granularity above 1,000, so it cannot separate a 1,200-person builder from a 40,000-person group. And rows 34 to 40 appear under a single category, so several are large multi-site groups whose pharmaceutical work may be one line in one plant. Check size and pharmaceutical relevance by hand before any of them goes into a revenue-sorted call list.

If you work from the register instead

Anyone rebuilding this segment from a Handelsregister, Unternehmensregister or Bundesanzeiger export needs classification codes rather than directory categories. Four WZ 2008 codes carry most of it.

WZ 2008DescriptionFit
28.29Herstellung von sonstigen nicht wirtschaftszweigspezifischen Maschinen a. n. g.Where most process, filling and sterilisation builders sit
28.93Herstellung von Maschinen für die Nahrungs- und Genussmittelindustrie sowie zur TabakverarbeitungFilling and packaging lines that straddle food and pharma
28.99Herstellung von Maschinen für sonstige bestimmte Wirtschaftszweige a. n. g.Names pharmaceutical machinery as a sub-activity in the WZ notes
28.25Herstellung von kälte- und lufttechnischen Erzeugnissen, nicht für den HaushaltCleanroom climate and HVAC builders

None of the four is pharmaceutical-only. 28.29 and 28.93 both mix in food-industry and general-industrial machinery builders, and 28.25 is dominated by ordinary refrigeration and ventilation. A register pull on these codes needs the same manufacturer-against-distributor and pharmaceutical-relevance filtering this Europages pull already applies, so treat the codes as a starting frame rather than an answer.

What this list will not do for you

It will not tell you which of these 2,092 companies is worth calling this quarter. A directory is a universe, and a universe is the input to a target list rather than the list itself. The timing layer sits on the buyer side: see which German pharma sites are hiring commissioning engineers right now for the same question asked from the plant end, and lead generation for pharmaceutical equipment for how qualification governs who can sell into these projects at all.

It also ages. A Europages profile changes when a company edits it, and this pull is a photograph taken on 9 September 2026. Cite the date with the number.

Frequently asked

How many pharmaceutical equipment manufacturers are there in Germany?
2,092 German companies list themselves under twelve pharmaceutical-equipment and GMP-supply categories on Europages as of 9 September 2026, deduplicated on the company profile from 3,140 category listings. That is a directory count and a lower bound rather than a register count: a builder without a Europages profile does not appear in it, and the figure includes distributors and service providers alongside manufacturers.
Which German state has the most pharma-equipment suppliers?
Nordrhein-Westfalen, with 441 of the 2,092 companies, ahead of Baden-Württemberg at 429 and Bayern at 386. Those three hold 60.0 percent of the list between them. Berlin and Hamburg lead the city ranking with 62 and 57 companies, which is a different question because a city state is one city.
How was the state assigned when the source has no state field?
By joining the city name to two free GeoNames files for Germany, the postal-code file and the gazetteer dump, and taking the state with the greatest weight where a name occurs in more than one. 1,211 distinct cities appear in the data and 16 resolved to nothing, covering 16 companies, which sit under Unassigned. No company was placed in a state by guesswork.
Can I use this list for outbound?
As a universe, yes, with the caveats on this page. It carries no contact data, no revenue and no evidence of GMP qualification, and a Europages listing does not mean the company sells into pharmaceutical manufacturing today. Under the GDPR you still need a lawful basis for contacting a named person at any of these companies, and in Germany the UWG governs the cold approach itself.
